In an era when big budget films featuring stars and superstars are trumpeted in with much hype, 42-year-old P.P. Sudevan has steered clear of the road much travelled.
With four shorts and two full-length films under his belt, Sudevan has carved a niche for himself by bringing out brilliant movies made on a pittance, compared to mainstream commercial filmmaking standards.
The high point came in 2013 when his feature debut CR No. 89, crowdfunded under the aegis of PACE (Platform for Arts and Cultural Excellence) Trust and made with a measly budget of ₹7 lakh, won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film.
Set in the remote Palakkad village Peringode, the film’s cast was assembled from its unassuming residents who had no prior experience in acting. But Sudevan says he’s not after fame. He is unwilling to budge even an inch from his idea of filmmaking, which puts artistry, democracy and simplicity at its core. His latest offering, Akatho Puratho, screened in the capital city recently, is a testament to his practising what he preaches.
