Subrahmanyapuram is a very niche script; debutant director Santossh Jagarlapudi should have realised that and done something to better Karthikeya and Damarukam to engage the audience. With such stories, audience know what’s in store for them in the end, all they want to see is how far the suspense element is sustained. Here, the ambitious start is not followed with crisp screenplay.

A man immolates himself in a 2000-year-old temple of Subrahmanya Swamy. A Swamiji foretells sinister happenings in the village. Soon, a series of unexplained deaths and suicides baffle the villagers and they get ready to leave the place.
Karthik (Sumanth) who does research on ancient temples is intrigued by the deaths but gets anxious when his friend dies and his girlfriend Priya (Esha Rebba) is saved in the nick of time. Esha Rebba looks good but her part is only to wait for the hero to propose. The romantic track is half-baked, making one wish there were some stimulating conversations regarding the research and the search for ‘God’, which would have lent credence to the story. The only interesting part in the film is the interval scene that compels you to sit through the next half. The last 15 minutes that reveal the reason for the mysterious deaths serve only to make us wish for a better climax.
Even television serials and short films on YouTube make an effort to look grand and offer a good spectacle; but wonder why this film lacks that. There is plenty of scope in the story to show emotions in the superstitious village but none of that happens. Having seen the climax, one feels that even technical brilliance and superlative performances would not help this narration. Subrahmanyapuram is definitely not what is depicted in the trailer.
